1- Intel Core i7

Processor i7

The Core i7 laptop is based on the recently introduced 45nm i5 / i7 (Lynnfield) desktop processors and is thus the first original quad-core CPU for notebook computers (where the Core 2 Quad CPUs consist of two Core 2 Duo CPUs on a single chip) .

controller. Due to the direct connection, memory performance should be clearly better compared to older Core 2 Duo / Core 2 Quad CPUs. According to Intel, memory bandwidth performance has doubled in SiSoft Sandra 2009.

Another feature of its architecture is the option to separately and dynamically switch single parts of the processor (cores, cache, I / O, system memory) on or off. Compared to the usual processor cases, this allows for more energy savings at low load (no leakage currents in the enclosed parts).

Since i7 CPUs use relatively low core clock rates (1.6-2.0GHz), the Turbo Boost technology already introduced in the latest Core 2 Duos becomes more important. Depending on the load and temperature, the speed of individual CPU cores can be significantly increased. For example, if only one core is used for capacity (and the cooling system is large enough) the Core i7-820QM can be overclocked from 1.73 GHz to 3.06 GHz. Due to automation overclocking, the i7 can score points on legacy apps (for example, old games) that only use one core. In this way, the fast Core 2 Duo processors can outperform in these applications.

If all 4 cores are used at the same time, the CPU can only overclock by one step (133MHz) (only if TDP is not yet used for capacity) The fewer cores, the more levels the turbo function can use (up to 10 On Core i7-820QM, i.e. from 1.73 GHz to 3.06).

How fast the processor is currently overclocking can be seen in the Turbo Boost Technology Monitor for Vista and Windows 7.

Hyper-Threading technology that was introduced in the times of Northwood Pentium 4 can now be found inside the Core i7. If the cores are not fully used (for example, only a single floating point process) Hyper-Threading can execute a second thread in them in order to improve the utilization of the processor core. Due to Hyper-Threading technology, these processors appear to be eight core CPUs and can run up to 25% faster. However, at times, Hyper-Threading overload can also cause a slight performance loss.

The integrated memory controller and original quad design also lead to a change in the cache architecture of i7s compared to Core 2 Quads. The multi-level shared cache system no longer relies on a huge level 2 cache per core, but in addition to a smaller L2 cache, the four cores also use a shared level 3 cache. This change should also improve Performance (especially using multi-threaded applications).

2- Core i7-M cache architecture

Due to the integration of the memory controller into the CPU, the chipset can be simplified. Instead of the previous three-chip solution with Core 2 Duo processors (CPU + Northbridge + Southbridge), Core i7 needs only one additional chip, which is responsible for PCI-E, USB, SATA, LAN communication, and audio chip. The newer is now connected by DMI and is no longer using FSB. At the launch date, a chipset called PM55 (Ibex Peak) is being used that includes 14 USB 2.0, 6 SATA 3GB / s, and 8 PCIe 2.0 x1 2.5 GT / s. Due to the loss of the memory controller, the PM55 consumes only 3.5W TDP compared to the 7W of the old PM45.

So, the total power consumption of 45W (QX series) and 3.5W (PM55) is slightly better than Core 2 Quad series -> 45W (Core i7 QX) + 17W PM45 compared to 45W (Core 2 Quad) + 7W (PM45) + 2.5W (ICH9M).

The ALUs themselves, compared to the Core 2 architecture, only improved slightly. The highlights are the new SSE4.1 and SSE4.2 instructions and some small improvements. Due to the onboard memory controller and new cache structure, the performance per MHz should still be better ..

- Performance

According to Intel's marketing, the new architecture, compared to Core 2 processors, can deliver clear performance gains in nearly all application areas. Compared to the previous quad-core top model QX9300, the i7-920XM's new results are about 10-80% better. Due to its overclocking option, this CPU can score points in single-threaded applications as well as in multi-threaded (new architecture) applications. Only in extreme cases and if overclocking is not applicable, is the QX9300 scored clearly higher.

Intel first started with only three very expensive models. They all feature 4 cores (8 threads through Hyper-Threading) and support for DDR3-1333. Listed prices are for purchasing 1000 pieces.
